2 Prior to CPOL Teachers’ observations and analysis of NAPLAN test data regularly found vocabulary to be a factor limiting students’ success. A termly vocabulary focus was written into the school’s Scope and Sequence Plan for Literacy. Some staff attended external professional learning on the teaching of vocabulary. In 2013 staff expressed concern that many students were having difficulties in developing decoding and spelling skills with students finding it difficult to hear sounds in words. Phonological awareness testing was introduced in grade 1/2 at the beginning of 2014 and included in the school’s Assessment Schedule. This informed planning for the development of phonological awareness at student point of need. DEECD assessment tools and the Rosner Test were used as pre and post tests.

3 ICPALER Oral Language Screening Profile All students from prep to year 2 were screened using the ICPALER Oral Language Screening Profile. Common themes emerged from all classes with a general need for students to speak in full sentences, develop more complex sentence structure and discourse. The teachers’ concerns about students’ phonological awareness were also confirmed.

4 Whole School Planning The teachers involved with the CPOL project formed a team. A CPOL action plan was drawn up.CPOL action plan All Prep and 1/2 classes are beginning to implement this plan with the support and direction from the teachers who attended the CPOL professional learning days. Vocabulary, sentence structure and phonological awareness have been detailed in the Literacy Scope and Sequence Plan.Literacy Scope and Sequence Plan Phonological awareness testing using the SPAT-R test has been included in the Assessment Schedule.Assessment Schedule

Literacy Resource Boxes A professional learning ‘play time’ will take place in term 1 this year to initiate the use of the Colourful Semantics cards. Yummy Words displays have been trialled in Prep to 2 classrooms and have been extended to the whole school through the Literacy Scope and Sequence Plan. Yummy Words In 1/2 classrooms, class Frayer charts are used each week to explore new words.Frayer charts The SPAT-R phonological awareness test is being trialled this year to improve and streamline our assessment of students’ phonological awareness. At breakfast club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, staff and volunteers explicitly guide students to communicate in full sentences.breakfast club
