Great Britain is famous for its customs and traditions. They are everywhere: in social life, in culture and even in politics. We can’t imagine that country without its unique traditions. I would like to tell you about some of them.

British traditional customs are closely connected with history. The first ceremony of changing the guard occurs to1660. The ceremony lasts for 45 minutes.

Every night Chief Warder closes the gate of the Tower. This ceremony lasts for 700 years long. The gates are locked at 9:53 pm.

The Sentry calls out: "Halt! Who comes there?" Chief Warder: "The keys." Sentry: "Whose keys?" Chief Warder: "Queen Elizabeth's keys." Sentry: "Pass Queen Elizabeth's Keys. All's well." (On the top of the Stairs) Chief Warder: "God preserve Queen Elizabeth." Sentry: "Amen!"

It’s one of the oldest traditions in Great Britain, people life style. People of Great Britain can drink more than five cups of tea a day. Every cafe owner offers eight or ten sorts of tea for taste. The tea is drunk hot, but not scalding

Halloween is celebrated at night from the 31 st October to the 1 st November. This festival combines praise of dark spirits and the worship of saints. Children go from house to house and they beg different sweets.

Boat race is held every year in spring. Cambridge and Oxford boats take part in this race. Each team includes six rowers and one helmsman. Rowers are always very strong and big, but helmsman is usually small and light.

The big race is held on the Thames in the western part of the city. The distance is 6 779 metres long. It is a very popular event. Audience includes 250 000 people and half of billion people watch the race on TV.

At the end of October the Queen arrives at the Houses of Parliament to the House of Lords for the State Opening of Parliament.

The chairperson of the House of Lords is Lord Chancellor. He sits on the woolsack, a large bag of wool covered with red cloth. It shows that wool made England rich.

It’s really impossible to mention all English traditions. Some of them are the same as in this country and are clear to Russian people, but some of traditions are unique and even strange. But I respect them, they are part of English culture.
