What is a National Heritage Area? -Designated by Congress and Subsidiary of the National Park Service - NPS is a partner and advisor -Natural, cultural and historic resources combine to form nationally important landscape -Community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development -Historic preservation -Natural resource conservation -Recreation -Heritage tourism -Educational projects -Currently 49 designated Heritage areas nationwide -Heritage Area Strategy -Foster public-private partnerships -Engage non-profit organizations -Shape both short and long term interests -Unify and empower community organizations -Highlight unique & distinctive qualities of regions and localities -Model collaboration and common goal development

Bringing the Trails into the Classroom Recommendations for Teachers - Visit trail markers within city or county – become subject matter expert - Highlight key points for encouraging deeper research - Develop writing and research projects based on key figures, stories or locations - Primary source training and critical thinking opportunities for students - Encourage outdoor physical activity – hiking, boating, sightseeing Recommendations for Students - Challenge each other to visit most markers - Encourage families to travel together to new areas of the state - Create scavenger hunts in towns or parks - Talk to parents and grandparents about family histories - Research relatives who fought in Civil War
