Mr Beaumont Memory

Mr Beaumont By the end of this lesson you should be able to: Describe the 3 different types of memory we use Understand the functions of each of the 3 different types of memories Clearly state the linking memory has with information processing

Mr Beaumont There are 3 types of memory that we use during information processing: Short Term Sensory Stores (STSS) Short Term Memory (STM) Long Term Memory (LTM) Along with this there are 3 processes that happen within memory: Encoding (putting information in to store) Maintenance (keeping it alive) Retrieval (finding encoded information)

Mr Beaumont Short Term Sensory Store (STSS) Receives information from the display Receives information from the sensors Information is filtered Selective Attention Large capacity Information stored for no longer than ½ second Subconscious First compartment of memory Encoding of information FUNCTIONS CHARACTERISTICS

Mr Beaumont Short Term Memory (STM) FUNCTIONS CHARACTERISTICS Limited capacity 5 - 9 Items Also known as the working memory Receives information from the short term sensory store Compares information from long term memory Receives feedback Initiates motor programmes Chunking can help Second compartment of memory Maintenance of information occurs here

Mr Beaumont FUNCTIONS CHARACTERISTICS Stores past experience as motor programmes Correct and meaningful information stored Receives encoded information from short term memory Retrieves information to send to the short term memory A store of well learned experiences Limitless capacity Stores items for dozens of years Last compartment of memory

Mr Beaumont Practice, Practice, Practice Association - Link learning to previous performance Chaining – Breaking down a complex movement in to simpler actions Chunking – Storing groups of information rather than single pieces Mental rehearsal – Performance in the mind How can we improve our memory? PACCM

Mr Beaumont Relax Clear picture of what needs to be done Use all your senses See performance through your ‘minds eye’ Evaluate and experience all consequences
