2Robert Lahmann – WPFL meeting Amsterdam – 6 July 2010 Devices 1.Acoustic positioning → Separate presentation 2.Optic calibration → Separate presentation 3.Compass / tilt 4.Speed of sound / CTD 5.Calibration Unit 6.Electronics Monitoring
3
3Robert Lahmann – WPFL meeting Amsterdam – 6 July 2010 Compass and Tiltmeter Tasos Belias is getting involved First step: Gather information, investigate devices Further involvement very welcome!

Used in ANTARES Compass boards TCM 2.0 and TCM 2.5 by PNI Sensor CorporationPNI Sensor Corporation Convey knowledge/experiences for use in bar structures Devices foreseen for Saclay Demonstrator 3 axis digital compass Honeywell HMC5843Honeywell HMC5843 Capacitive humidity module DigiPicco(tm) Basic I2CDigiPicco(tm) Basic I2C Tests with Network Interface Kit scheduled HMC5843 Three-Axis Compass IC Sensors based on fiber technology

NEMO two compass/tiltmeter - a "low resolution" system (directly connected to the detector power line) used during the tower unfurling phase and as backup compass system. - a "high resolution" system connected to the storey electronics, switched on when the tower is in operational mode. Ongoing implementing also new solutions. Co-operation with ALL experts involved to interface with FEE boards

6Robert Lahmann – WPFL meeting Amsterdam – 6 July 2010 Auxiliary Measurements for Calibration ANTARES Experience: Prefer CTD (Conductivity – Temperature – Depth) over SV (sound velocimeter) Need temperature measurements over large volume (changes over 1km 3 scale)? Hydrophones, LED beacons on Detection Units (DUs); Install Calibration Units (CUs) for further devices

7Robert Lahmann – WPFL meeting Amsterdam – 6 July 2010 Calibration Unit Mechanical structure not clear Potential devices: –Current meter (ADCP) –Light transmission meter, measurement of optical properties –CTD SV for cross checks? –Marine science?

8Robert Lahmann – WPFL meeting Amsterdam – 6 July 2010 Monitoring of PMTs/Electronics (humidity/temperature) Humidity sensors: Not useful Are showing evaporated water, not water level; in ANTARES only “post-mortem” analysis Temperature sensors: Useful if the knowledge of a problem allows to prevent greater damage (propagation of problem) KM3NeT design important! Personal (preliminary) bottom line of R.L. after asking for opinions of several experts:
