2.1: In what ways do chemicals affect your life? By PresenterMedia.com PresenterMedia.com

 Every day you use substances that have been invented to make your life easier and more enjoyable! Eg. Due to expense, steel cans were replaced with aluminum cans and glass bottles gave way to plastic bottles.  Many different products can be made from recycled PET ( p oly e thylene t erephthalate) plastic. 2.1: In what ways do chemicals affect your life?

 Before school today you used or touched: Toothpaste, soap, water, food, paper, concrete, metal  When you clean your house you use: Detergent, vinegar, furniture polish  To maintain a vehicle, a mechanic will use: Engine oil, lubricating oil, windshield-washer fluid, transmission fluid. Everything-including you & everything around you-is made up of chemicals!

People are not chemical-free. We are made up of mostly 4 chemicals! Matter: The “Stuff” of the Universe What is a Chemical? The word “chemical” does not have a specific meaning. This is because everything in the world that isn’t energy is a chemical or contains chemicals. When people use the word “chemical”, they are really talking about matter. Matter: def’n - anything that has mass and takes up space

Substances have characteristics that make them useful, hazardous, or both!

Plastic grocery bags have been banned by many stores. Ironically, they were introduced in the 1970’s to provide a solution to paper bags. Does not use trees, recycling takes less energy, can be reused, more durable & lightweight Many hazards have been associated with plastic bags recently Due to features (very durable) that made them so attractive in the first place Plastics: Not All Are Alike

Eg. Collecting bloody laundry in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) plastic bags lowers the risk of infection PVA bags dissolve in hot water! This could have many other applications in the future once risks are assessed. Plastics: Not All Are Alike
