My signature philosophical quote: “As an educator, a philosophy focus should be to ensure that students get the essential knowledge and skills needed to be successful in life.” (Roberson, 2014) I have three main points to focus on for a student directed philosophy: Students are individuals Back to the Basics Knowledge and the teacher Newman, R. Effective lesson planning begins with good learning objectives. Effective objectives are manageable, measurable, made first and most important (Newman, 2013). The best way to design effective lesson plans is by using the backwards design approach. Using backward design planning begins with the end in mind. “As teachers create effective lesson plans, they must have a clear goal on what they want the students to learn.” Students’ in the learning process is actively engaged. Students are teacher-and-student-directed in the classroom. Students are able to take over their learning and own what they learn. Newman, R. (2013). Formative Assessments Used to check for learning; assessment for learning Has the greatest impact on student achievement Preeminent to support learning in the classroom Examples include: bell-work, exit tickets, quizzes, fist-to-five, etc. Summative Assessments Used to evaluate the effectiveness of learning; assessment of learning Calculated post-learning Preeminent to help teacher improve teaching strategies Examples include: benchmarks, major tests, final exams, etc. Assessment refers to the process used to determine, in measurable terms, the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs of the learner (Newman, 2013). Assessments are to be used to shape teaching and learning for students and actively engaging them in their own learning process. The role of assessments is to focus on and ensure student achievement. There are two main types of assessments… & JCheek. (2008). Formative assessment versus summative assessment [Presentation slides].
