Spain = King Philip II VERY STRICT CATHOLIC!!! = militant Wants all of Europe/World to be Catholic Willing to go to war for his cause (bankrupting Spain with costly wars!) Loses to England & Netherlands = loses standing as a world power!!

England = Queen Elizabeth I Protestant = moderate Wants to keep England Protestant, but does allow some religious freedom/tolerance to Catholics Tried to balance power of France & Spain = if 1 seemed to gain power, England would support the weaker nation Defeated Spanish Armada – King Philip II tried to invade England & force them to be Catholic! Est. England as a world power!!

Protestant Peace created with “Edict of Nantes” Allowed Huguenots religions freedoms Made Catholicism official religion of France
