8. Spain = King Philip II VERY STRICT CATHOLIC!!! = militant  Wants all of Europe/World to be Catholic  Willing to go to war for his cause (bankrupting Spain with costly wars!)  Loses to England & Netherlands = loses standing as a world power!!

England = Queen Elizabeth I Protestant = moderate  Wants to keep England Protestant, but does allow some religious freedom/tolerance to Catholics  Tried to balance power of France & Spain = if 1 seemed to gain power, England would support the weaker nation  Defeated Spanish Armada – King Philip II tried to invade England & force them to be Catholic!  Est. England as a world power!!

Protestant  Peace created with “Edict of Nantes”  Allowed Huguenots religions freedoms  Made Catholicism official religion of France
