1 Future of Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI) Florida Department of TRANSPORTATION Kirk Hutchison Office of Maintenance

2 RCI History RCI was created in 1975 to store roadway inventory. –Resided in an IMS mainframe hierarchical database. –Hard to manage data and produce reports. –Only Planning and Maintenance Features were collected. –Maintenance used the data to create the Statewide Maintenance Budget. Florida Department of Transportation

3 RCI History RCI was refreshed in 2004 to a Web front- end system. –Resides in an DB2 mainframe relational database. –Maintenance still uses the data for budget purposes. –Traffic Operations has some features in RCI now. –Added new modes of transportation (Rail and soon Trails). 4 RCI Current Florida Department of Transportation Florida’s Roads 23,341 miles – Off System 12,116 miles – SHS ** 1,495 miles – Interstate (part of SHS) 35,457 miles in RCI 86,934 miles Not in RCI 122,391 miles Total ** 43,763 lane miles in the State Highway System (December 2015 Mileage Report)

5 RCI Current Contract awarded to ISF for the RCI business requirements project on July 9, 2015. –Time line of project was 8/6/15 through 2/5/16. –Created the requirements documentation for next step. Florida Department of Transportation

6 RCI Current Worked with ISF to conduct JAR (Joint Application Requirement) sessions through out the state. –28 JAR sessions. –9/14/15 – 11/4/15. –592 data requirements. –26 business requirements –258 functional requirements –33 non-functional requirements Florida Department of Transportation

7 RCI Future There is a need for other modes of non- linear transportation systems to be added –Airports –Seaports New system will be Geospatial. Re-design how some features are collected –Signs –Guardrail Florida Department of Transportation

8 RCI Future Schedule IV B was created to fund next portion of project. –Supported by the Governor –Not supported by House and Senate, not funded. Finding money in other areas to keep this project moving forward. Florida Department of Transportation

9 RCI Future In the mean time: –Added new feature for Cable Barrier systems. –Added new characteristic for Bold Landscape under the Landscape Feature. –Going to update Maintenance Add screens to utilize drop down boxes for codes on certain characteristics. Florida Department of Transportation
