4 Progressive Presidents Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt (Republican/Progressive) 0 Roosevelt became President after the assassination of President McKinley

5 Progressive Presidents Theodore Roosevelt 0 Square Deal – Roosevelt’s campaign promise to take care of the common people 0 Trust Busting – He was known as a trust buster by breaking up large companies that had a monopoly or was close to being one. 0 Pure Food and Drug Act – He signed this into law that required rules for handling food cleanly and Must accurately label what is in food. 0 Conservation- He helped set aside millions of acres of land for conservation and protection. 6 Progressive Presidents Theodore Roosevelt “bully pulpit” – he saw the office as President as a way to influence media and Legislation 0 Roosevelt blended conservative Republican ideas with Progressive ideas. Roosevelt endorsed Taft for President, but later was mad at Taft and ran against him in 1912. Roosevelt was very progressive but his weakness was he ignored civil rights for women and minorities.

10 Progressive Presidents William Howard Taft 0 Because Taft was not progressive enough, the Progressives from the Republican Party split off to form the Progressive/Blue Moose Party which split the vote in the next election which leads to Wilson’s election.

11 Discussion Question 0 How did Taft hurt the Republican Party during the 1912 Presidential election? 0 His beliefs and policies led to a split of the Republican Party. Some progressives of the Republican Party felt that Taft was not Progressive enough.

12 Progressive Presidents Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson (Democrat) Wilson won the 1912 election largely because the Republican Party was split into two by the Progressive Party. He supported small business and free market competition and thought all business monopolies were evil.
