SCIENCE SAFETY ALWAYS WAIT FOR THE TEACHER’S DIRECTIONS!!!!
3
GENERAL SAFETY RULES: Never begin a lab or activity without waiting for the teacher’s directions! Wear goggles (and other safety gear) when necessary: When working with heat or fire When working with glass or sharp objects When working with liquids Follow all written and verbal instructions EXACTLY! Report any unsafe conditions or accidents to the teacher immediately.

USING EMERGENCY SAFETY EQUIPMENT Using a fire extinguisher: Pull the tab Aim at the base of the fire Squeeze the trigger Sweep the nozzle at the fire Using a fire blanket Unfold the blanket Hold it by the corners, keeping it between you and the fire Lay the blanket over the fire and leave for at least 30 minutes Using a face/eyewash station Push or pull the lever and flush your skin or eyes for 15 minutes When using the eyewash, you must hold your eyes open while you flush.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS—OCCURS IN PLANTS Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) Enters through stomata Radiant energy is absorbed by chlorophyll in the leaves Water (H 2 O enters through roots Oxygen (O 2 ) released through stomata Glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) stays in the plant
6
FOOD CHAINS A food chain shows the flow of energy from an organism to organism
7
FOOD WEBS ARE INTERCONNECTED FOOD CHAINS
8
PRODUCERS ARE USUALLY PLANTS; GIVE THEIR ENERGY TO THE RPIMARY CONSUMERS
9
PRIMARY CONSUMERS GET THEIR ENERGY FROM PRODUCERS; THEIR ENERGY GOES TO THE SECONDARY CONSUMER MOSTLY HERBIVORES; SOME OMNIVORES
10
SECONDARY CONSUMERS Give their energy to the tertiary consumers; Get their energy from the primary consumers; Primarily carnivores; sometimes omnivores
11
TERTIARY CONSUMERS Get their energy from the secondary consumers; Carnivores; some are omnivores
12
ENERGY PYRAMID Shows the AMOUNT of energy that flows from one level of a food web to the next. Only 10% is available to go to go from one level to the next level.
13
COMPOSTING AND DECOMPOSITION Releases nutrients from the dead organisms Some of the energy stored in the organisms is released as HEAT!
