BIO BELL RINGERS WEEK OF 10/19/15 IAN PG. 4 8 MONDAY 10/19/15 REFER TO SECTION 3-3 IN YOUR TEXTBOOK. ANSWER SECTION REVIEW QUESTIONS 1-4 ON PAGE 80.
2
3-3 CYCLES OF MATTER MAIN IDEAS 1.Biogeochemical Cycle 2.Evaporation 3.Transpiration 4.Nutrient 5.Nitrogen Fixation 6.Denitrification 7.Primary Productivity 8.Limiting Nutrient 9.Algal Bloom Objective Describe & explain how matter cycles through the Biosphere identifying the affects of nutrient limitations using highlighted diagrams & written explanations. IaN pg. 57
3
Biogeochemical Cycles = the interdependence of matter between the environment & organisms.
4
I. Recycling in the Biosphere A. Energy is not recycled, it flows from the sun up each level of the food web. B. Matter [atoms] is recycled endlessly though the biosphere.
5
II. Water Cycle p. 75 in text
6
III. Nutrient Cycles (Carbon, Nitrogen & Phosphorous) A. Food [nutrients] we eat contains energy, but it also contains the chemicals [atoms] that are the building blocks of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. B. Atoms are not used up like the energy, instead they are recycled through the biosphere.
7
1. Carbon Cycle Where is carbon stored? a. In the atmosphere b. In the ocean c. Underground in rocks [calcium carbonate] and as fossil fuels d. In living organisms such as trees/forests https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D7hZpIYlCA

Carbon Cycle p. 77 in text

2. Nitrogen Cycle & Bacteria a. Nitrogen fixation i. Nitrogen leaves atmosphere and enters soil. ii. Bacterial and Atmospheric b. Denitrification i. Bacteria converts nitrogen back to a gas and enters the atmosphere. c. Nitrification i. Bacteria converts nitrogen in soil into different forms.

IV. Nutrient Limitation A. Ecosystems can be lacking in a single nutrient = 1. Ocean ecosystems are usually limited by Nitrogen 2.Freshwater ecosystems are often limited by Phosphorous B. = rate at which organic matter is produced. Dependent on Nutrient availability. Limiting Nutrient Primary Productivity
13
V. Algal bloom A.Rapid growth of producers/algae can be caused by the addition of a limiting nutrient to an ecosystem. 1. Runoff of fertilizers used for agriculture.
