1 Ryan Judy Romeo and Juliet Theme Test Definition: Them is the universal ideas explored in a literary work Theme: Love should not be forced onto anther person.

2 Summary: Romeo is requesting a kiss from Juliet just after meeting her. Direct Quote: “O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do! They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” Act 1, Scene 5, Lines103 and 104 Explanation and connection: Even though Romeo just met Juliet he is still wanting a kiss. This is forcing love onto her that will send her down a spiral of despair and will ultimately end with her killing herself over this sudden, undeveloped love that Romeo will force onto her. The reader should take that love is not something that should not be forced onto another person.

3 Summary: Capulet is stating that Juliet may go anywhere she wants as long as she does not come back. He is saying this because she will not marry Paris and go through with the marriage arrangements. Direct Quote: “Graze where you will, you shall not house with me.” Act 3, Scene 5, Line 190 Explanation and connection: This is just another layer to the downwards spiral that Juliet is going through. She is being forced to marry Paris or be disowned by her father. Since she is already married to Romeo she cannot marry Paris and this causes a chain of events. This can be very hard on a child of her age and being forced to marry a man that she barely knows is already bad enough. This can teach the reader that love should not be enforced onto another person.

4 Summary: This is Capulet saying that on Thursday, Juliet, his daughter will get married to Paris. Direct Quote: “A’ Thursday let it be-a’ Thursday, tell her, she shall be married to this noble earl.” Act 3, Scene 4, Lines 21 and 22 Explanation and connection: By forcing Juliet to get married to Paris she is desperate for help to try and stop the wedding and turns to the Friar. She would even go to the lengths of death if it meant not being with Paris and forever being truly married to Romeo. Because of forcing this marriage Juliet and the Friar come up with a plan to fake her death. When Romeo sees Juliet dead he kills himself then Juliet awakes and then kill herself over Romeo. By forcing this love onto Juliet and trying to create a false love the death of two innocent children are cause. Forcing love can be very dangerous therefore it should not be enforced onto another.
