Marine Biology- BL. 6 Turn in your signed syllabus into the brown box on the desk next to the door. Sit down quietly and answer the following: - What is your definition of a Scientist? - How many oceans are there and what are they? - What effects do humans have on the ocean?

Marine Biology CH. 1- Introduction to Marine Science

What is a Scientist? A scientist is someone who uses the processes of science to find answers about how and why things work in the world and in the observable universe.

4 Two influences and Three marine resources make the ocean valuable to life 2 Influences: Weather World climate patterns The Ocean provides such resources: Food Oxygen Oil

5 Example of how much of the ocean humans have seen: One period on any page of your textbook in comparison to the entire page is about equal to what we have explored. How much have humans seen? Humans have seen the entire surface of the ocean but very little below the surface

6 Human effects on the Ocean What is your guess?

7 Is it mankind’s responsibility to take care of the planet? Genesis 1:26 Human effects on the Ocean Commercial Fishing- Depleting fish types Deterioration of marine environments such as coral reefs and mangroves due to pollution

8 Importance: Allows us to make responsible decisions in regards to the ocean- - Voting - What products/services to buy - Preserving the ocean Ocean Literacy Definition: Understanding the basic concepts related to how the ocean functions as an ecosystem, its importance to the Earth’s ecosystem, and how/why it is vital to human existence.

9

10 Work Start your notes on the rest of CH. 1. You will be quizzed at the beginning of next class. You may use only your notes during the following quiz. Keep QUIET

11 Marine Science Definition: the process of discovering facts, processes, and unifying principles that explain the nature of the ocean, its associated life forms, and how the ocean interacts with other Earth systems.

12 Oceanography: Definition: the science recording and describing the ocean’s contents and processes. Basically synonymous to Marine Science

13 3) Geological Oceanography 4) Physical Oceanography Branches of Oceanography: 1) Biological Oceanography 2) Chemical Oceanography

14 Biological Oceanography Studies life in the ocean, how life influences Earth systems, and ocean’s role as their habitat

15 Chemical Oceanography Studies the chemistry of seawater by measuring the rates and effects of chemical reactions in the ocean and the chemical changes brought about by nature and people.

16 Geological Oceanography Geology of the ocean. Examines the composition of marine sediments, rocks, undersea volcanoes, seabed movement, undersea earthquakes, etc.

17 Physical Oceanography the study of ocean influences on weather, climate, and water movement, such as waves, currents, and tides. Also how sound and light travel through water.

Traditional Science Disciplines Physical Science- Study of matter and energy. Involves examining and understanding the structure of atoms and molecules and the properties of different energy forms: light, heat, sound. Life Science- Study of loving things and their interactions with their environments. Earth and Space Science- Study of the physical Earth, solar system, universe, and their interrelationships.

4 Study areas Marine Science Involves: Science as inquiry (questions) Science and Technology Science in personal and social perspectives The historical nature of science **Situatedness- the explanation of when, where, and why a concept came about.

Classwork Beta Fish Temperature Experiment- Record all data you observe! Homework Finish notes on all of CH. 1 In regards to the Beta Fish Temperature Experiment, define: Problem Hypothesis Control Group Experimental Group Independent Variable Dependent Variable Conclusion How can this conclusion benefit us as marine scientist?
