NW FRS Sustainability Background NWFRSs committed to collaborate to secure a safer and more sustainable North West through the NW F & R Management Board Grant funding secured from NW Improvement & Efficiency Partnership (NWIEP) to fund four 3 year 2008/11 regional programmes in: Environmental Sustainability (£150K) Value for Money (£110K) Community Engagement (£150K) Innovation (£40K) Governance of programmes is delivered via NWFR Management Board, each Programme is sponsored by NW FRS CFOs & has defined outputs & outcomes. Each project managed by project manager & attended by FRS representative & member champions

Environment & Sustainability Programme Attendance: Uniform / Non Uniform representative from each FRS, member champions, NWFR Board regional representative, GoNW representative & guest partners, meets every 2 months, venues rotated Key resource: Web portal to share documents, information, news, strategies, policies, reports, contacts etc. Aims of Network: Implement Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001, BS 8555) Deliver collective carbon reductions, share best practice knowledge & experience Encourage & develop innovation on sustainability issues within the FRSs NW FRS Sustainability Network Resources

NW FRS Sustainability Network Results so far MFRS, GMFRS & CFRS ISO 14001 & BS8555 certification 1 st FRS Carbon Trust Local Authority Carbon Management Partnership All FRSs signatories to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change 5 to 8% reduction in direct CO 2 emissions in 2009 saving ~ £500K Contributing to LSP / LAA NIs 185, 186, 188 Developed NW FRS sustainability self assessment tool KLOE 3.1 group gap analysis & sharing Knowledge share examples: web portal, environment protection units, carbon foot printing of fires, green travel plans, sustainable procurement, low carbon technologies, natural resource KPIs Shared capital projects: pump telemetry, pressure washers, pac lider, heat mats, tyre pressure gauges, joint capital bids

Learnings to share 1. Commitment from CFO / NW FRS Management Board key to delivering results 2. Regional partners are keen to get involved to support regional improvements & funding available 3. Improved potential to win grants & bids
