18
“World Day for water quality control” Analysis made by students (1º/2º Bachillerato) in several tributary streams that flow into four main rivers in Spain: Segura river and Júcar river (into the Mediterranean Sea) Guadalquivir river and Guadiana river (into the Athlantic Ocean)

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR OUR FUTURE In my opinion protecting the environment is something that everyone should do. There is no doubt that if we don’t help to preserve our world, we are going to finish it off. I’m concerned about the high damage which our planet is suffering. The smoke and the exhaust fumes are damaging the ozone layer and global warming is becoming a problem. Furthermore, the pollution is bad for us too. The best solutions for these problems of contamination are recycling the litter, wasting less water, as well as using renewable energies and reducing the consumption of energy. In conclusion, protecting the environment is an important fact in which all the people must play their part. Rosa (Alcaraz, Spain)
25
Creation of a school magazine (“Simon dice”) with articles about the projects and activities done at school (plantation of trees, students’ chats, carbon footprint…)

IMPROVEMENT OF THE SCHOOL SITUATION (School agenda) Registration in the Project “School Agenda 21” the topic for this year has been WATER. Eco-school committee to analyse and improve the situation: Environmental review of the school “Saving water” questionnaire Participation in the national schools quiz “You can help” All the members of the school community answered a questionnaire to evaluate our use of water, energy, waste and noise. questionnaire
44
Questionnaire “situation of school” What is the annual consumption of electricity? Are lights turned off when not used? What types of bulbs are used? Are the electric appliances turned off or on stand-by when not used? Are lights on in places with good lighting? What kind of energy is used for the heating system and how much is spent? Are there any leaks in the toilets…? Do students use the right type of clothes when in class?
45
ACTION PLAN water / waste To install saving-water mechanisms in the school toilets, showers… To encourage the collection and use of water from the rain Give students a cloth bag for their sandwiches to use it instead of a plastic bag Reuse paper used on just one side to do some works or to take notes Build “green points” in all the buildings and the playground for a se lective collection of rubbish in different containers Reuse the waste collected in some school activities
46
ACTION PLAN energy / noise To install “butterfly” valves in the radiators to save energy To install low energy light bulbs To install sensors in the corridors to turn on and off the lights automatically To install solar panels to obtain energy for heating Soundproofing of music room
47
ACTION PLAN energy / noise To install solar panels to obtain energy for heating Building of compost piles to obtain fertilizes from the organic waste for the ecological vegetable garden.
