GROW ESSENTIAL OIL PROJECT By Kylee H

MY QUESTION What essential oils are good for reducing acne, stress and aging on your face?

SUPPORTING QUESTIONS  Is there a certain type of oil that affects your face in a positive and clean way? Why?  Why do the minerals in the oils affect our faces in the way they do?  Why can't all oils reduce the acne and aging on your face?  Why do you get acne and aging wrinkles on you face from stress?

DEFINITION OF ESSENTIAL OIL An essential oil is a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted. All of the essential oils have different properties that impact you in different ways. Each of them have a different purpose down to the minerals used and the plants they come from. Skin problems have to most cures of any problem that can be fixed by essential oils there are many types that can help. Some oils can be mixed together to make the perfect combination for your skin and your health.

MY AIM FOR THIS PROJECT I would like to focus my project on...  Figuring out what oils are good for helping your face with stress, aging and acne.  Find out the side effects of the oils in good or bad ways on your face.  Also to see if the predicaments are true about these oils.

HOW THESE OILS ARE FOUND AND EXTRACTED All of these oils are extracted from the plant itself. The essential oils are found in the cells of aromatic plants and held in specialized glands. These plants have strong distinctive smells. There are two forms of extraction… Distillation: Distillation is a method of separating components based on differences. Steam distillation involves bubbling steam through the plant material. Expression: Also referred to as “cold pressed”, is a method where oil is obtained by using high mechanical pressure to squeeze the oil from the plants material.

THE OILS THAT ARE GOING TO BE USED IN MY EXPERIMENT AND THE ASSUMPTIONS OF EACH PRODUCT Geranium Essential Oil helps regulate oil production and reduces acne breakouts. It also helps improve skin elasticity and tighten skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also promotes blood circulation to the areas where it is applied, helping to heal bruises, cuts, and other skin conditions. Lavender Essential Oil is one no one should go without. It helps you relax and your body adapt to stress, and has great benefits for the skin. It helps regenerate skin cells so is great for mature skin, sun spots, and scarring.

THE OILS THAT ARE GOING TO BE USED IN MY EXPERIMENT AND THE ASSUMPTIONS OF EACH PRODUCT Rose Essential Oil is great for dry or aging skin. Researchers have found that it contains several therapeutic compounds known to promote healing, especially antimicrobial and anti- inflammatory compounds. As a result, rose essential oil helps refine skin texture and tone, and can be helpful with managing skin conditions. Tea Tree Essential Oil is one of the more well-known essential oils for acne-prone skin. Its antibacterial properties help ward off acne-causing bacteria. It also helps to regulate oil production, which can decrease the severity and incidence of breakouts.

MY EXPERIMENT My experiment is to test 4 different essential oils on 4 different people with different skin types. I want to give each of my test subjects a sample of one of the oils. Each of the test subjects will use the oil for one week to see the changes in their face. For one week, they will be putting the oil on their face and every two days they will answer a survey on how the oil is effecting their faces so far. The oil that they are putting on their face could have a positive or negative impact on their skin. At the end of the week, they will take a final survey and explain if the oil positivity effected their face or not.

TEST SUBJECT A- GERANIUM OIL Type of Skin- Sensitive Combo (Oily and Dry) 4/1 Survey: The oil has been helping get rid of other oils on their face and made it much smoother. They think by the end of this experiment their face will be better than it was before. 4/3 Survey: The changes have been getting less and less effective on their skin. Their skin has gotten dryer as the experiment has progressed. Also the smell is really strong. As the experiment goes on their hopes are going down for the oil to work. 4/5 Survey: The oil actually began to irritate their skin, so they stopped using it after 4/4. The oil did not work on their skin. It’s a strong oil and there were more think it has more negative effects on my skin than positives. It made their skin dry and irritated. It was a bit too strong for their skin. It might work for people with less sensitive skin. Final Survey: It did not help their skin. It didn’t work on their skin. They think that it could work, but not for them. It made the skin dry and irritated. It was just think it’s a bit too strong for their skin. (same as 4/5) I think that this oil would work on people who don’t have sensitive skin that are able to try out different things. They don’t think that it worked for them. They would not use this oil again. Before Picture: After Picture:

TEST SUBJECT B- LAVENDER OIL Type of Skin- Sensitive Skin 4/1 Survey: The oil has made the skin around the area less irritated and has reduced redness and the urge to touch it. Also it has made the skin around it softer. They think by the end of this experiment that the area should be cleared. 4/3 Survey: The oil has reduced the scar in the area. Also they feel a bit calmer when they put the oil on. The oil hasn’t done anything bad to their skin. They still think by the end of the experiment the area will be cleared. 4/5 Survey: The essential oil has made the redness of the area disappear and has also made the area softer and smoother. It has worked on their face. The essential oil has made their face a lot softer and has also made the irritation of the area disappear. By the end, they hope to find their skin less irritated and have more smoothness and elasticity. Final Survey: The oil made their skin more soft and reduced irritation around the area. Their skin did not react to the oil in any way. They would use this product again because it helped their skin. Before Picture: After Picture:

TEST SUBJECT C- ROSE OIL Type of Skin- Normal (not oily or dry) 4/1 Survey: It has made their face smell good. The ageing lines in that area have become a little less visible. After that there hasn’t been any more changes. At this time they are unsure with the results at the end of this experiment. 4/3 Survey: Their face still smells good and the skin in the area is now softer. The aging line are now less visible than before. They feel that there will be a slight change in appearance by the end of the experiment. 4/5 Survey: It has made their face softer. It has made their face look and feel a lot softer and less wrinkles around the area. They hope to find that the essential oil will make the elasticity of their skin smoother. Final Survey: The oil made the lines on their skin softer and less defined. Their skin did not react to the oil in anyway. They said they might use the oil again but it is questionable. Before Picture: After Picture:

TEST SUBJECT D- TEA TREE OIL Type of Skin- Oily 4/1 Survey: The oil has been helping a little bit so far. Since putting it on some of the area where the oil was applied. They feel in the first 2 days that their skin has cleared up a bit. If it keeps working the way it has been they think that the results will be good. 4/3 Survey: At this point they say that the oil has helped their skin very much. There are not that many effects. They said that some of the acne has flaked off since putting on the oil. They believe that at the end of this experiment that the results will be good and their forehead will be cleared. 4/5 Survey: It has gotten worse since 4/3. They said that more acne has formed. It was helping their skin when the experiment first started but otherwise it got worse. They think that it will help a little bit by the end, but not that much. Final Survey: Same as yesterday the acne has gotten a little worse. At first it was working good but after a while their skin was reacting to it. They said that they would not use this oil again. Before Picture: After Picture:

THE RESULTS THANKS TO ALL OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN MY EXPERIMENT Each of these results depend on the type of skin you have. Geranium Oil: The subject said that it was helping in the first few days but as the week went on their face got worse and worse. This product may not be great for a combo type skin. The predicament for the oil was not fully correct at first it helped with areas on the face. So overall, you want to apply the product carefully on your face so it wont have a strong reaction to it. Lavender Oil: The subject said that it helped clear to redness of the area. It made their skin softer and more healthy. This product is good for people with sensitive skin. It also helped reduce the stress level for the subject and gave them a nice scent on their skin. Rose Oil: The subject said that it reduced the aging lines on their skin. By the end of the experiment their skin was soft and moisturized. Rose oil is good for all skin types if applied in a good amount. Also the oil has a nice calming smell to it. Tea Tree Oil: The subject said that the oil was good for the first few days. After more time to product began to irritate the skin. In a result to that they concluded that maybe you should apply the oil every other day not to hurt your skin. This product is good for any skin type if applied right.

SUGGESTIONS 1. If your skin on your face has some of these problems look in to one of these oils. 2. Keep an open mind about how the oil will work. 3. The results will always vary depending on the type of skin. 4. Some of the oils work better on different types of skin so do a little research on the oil you are going to use. 5. Before using test on your arm to make sure there is no reaction (you don’t want to make your face worse)
