9 Health Threats Mission To provide a high level of human health protection against communicable diseases and other health threats through development of EU level actions and strategies and to support the actions of the Member States in that area To improve preparation and response to public health emergencies To ensure close coordination with other Community policy areas to integrate public health concerns in the fields of communicable diseases and other health threats Three work areas: TEAM 1 Preparedness, Exercises, Information, and Communication TEAM 2 Prevention, Early warning, Response coordination, and Legal measures TEAM 3 Health Security Committee and non-biological threats 24h/7d on-duty service

16 Developing New partnerships: Nutrition and Physical Activity Alarming rates of obesity in particular in young people – diet/activity key health determinants EU role in food law (labelling, health claims) - agriculture, education, transport, taxation… Consumer information, advertising and marketing Develop new partnerships 2004: Roundtable on Obesity 2005: Platform on Diet, Physical Activity and Health A new strategy 2005: Green Paper (consultation) 2006: White Paper on Nutrition and Physical Activity 2007: High Level Group – Salt initiative

17 DEBATE ON THE ISSUES FACING THE HEALTH WORKFORCE IN EUROPE The Commission's Annual Policy Strategy for 2008 provides for a Green Paper on the health workforce which is planned for publication towards the end of 2008.

Plus: Prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections.
