Four Dimensions of Health: Essential Question: What are the dimensions of health and what are the skills I need to be a healthy individual?

Physical: how well our bodies function and are taken care of (work, play, chores, walking, etc.) Includes: nutrition, preventive care, exercise, etc.

Social: how well we get along with other people, maintain relationships, be productive member of society, etc

Emotional: how well we feel about ourselves, deal with emotions, and how well we handle stress

Intellectual: how well we gather information, challenge our minds, think Includes setting realistic, but challenging goals and how to solve problems

Additional Dimensions… Spiritual (religion, beliefs, etc.) Environmental (things in our environment) Occupational (our job)

What determines our Health? Heredity: Physical conditions that are passed down from parent to child

What determines our Health? Environment: (our surroundings) Physical: air and water pollution, sunlight, second hand smoke Social: social/peer pressures, influences (friends, parents, etc.) Cultural: the time and place where we live

What determines our Health? Health Care: the availability and cost of health care (ability to prevent and treat diseases)

What determines our Health? Behaviors: the choices we make ***greatest effect on our well-being

Life Skills Just like you need skills and tools to build a house, you need skills and tools to build a happy, healthy life. These tools for building a healthy life are called life skills.

Assessing your Health Helps you evaluate your health and how your actions and behaviors affect your health.

Communicating Effectively Involves good communication skills, including listening and speaking effectively.

Practicing Wellness Practicing healthy behaviors Examples: Getting enough sleep, choosing nutritious foods, and avoiding risky behaviors

Coping Dealing with troubles or problems in an effective way

Being a Wise Consumer Helps you make good decisions when buying health products and services.

Evaluating Media Messages Gives you the tools to analyze media messages (TV, internet, radio, movies, advertisements, etc.)

Using Community Resources Helps you identify services in your community and describe how they can assist you.
