Introduction What would our society be like now if we did not have ATm’s? Not able to access money when we urgently want it. You will have to go to the bank and wait in a long que to get an amount of money. Banks are not open 24\7 so you cant get cash money at all times. ATM’s are time saving, easy to use and is located nearly everywhere. Egs: shopping centres, outside banks etc.

What is an ATM? The term ATM stands for automated telling machine It is the terminal we use when we want to check the balance in our accounts or withdraw money without walking into the branch itself. An ATM is a data terminal with two input devices and four output devices

How Do ATM’s Work After entering a PIN (personal identification number) the ATM will link up to another machine called a host computer which allows the access to the bank’s accounts in a separate server. This separation between the bank’s computer and the host gives greater security and easier, more versatile, access by not being restricted to one computer for networking

Parts of the Machine As you know, ATM’s have two input devices which include: Card reader: This device reads and analysis the information stored in the magnetic stripe on the back of a credit/debit card. Keypad: The keypad allows the cardholder to tell the bank what kind of transaction is required (cash withdrawal, balance inquiry etc). The bank requires the cardholders personal identification (PIN) for security purposes.

Parts of the Machine ATM’s also have four output devices which include: Speaker: The speakers provide the users with auditory feedback. Display screen: The display screen takes the user through each step of the transaction process. Receipt printer: It provides the user with a paper receipt with all the transaction information requested. Cash dispenser: This part is very important for the cardholder as it dispenses the cash money out. This money is located in a safe in the bottom portion of the ATM.

ATM Security It is recommended that you should select your own personal identification number (PIN). Try not to write down your PIN on a piece of paper just in case you lose it. Try not to make the PIN number difficult to remember. Avoid using personal identifications such as birth dates, phone number etc Keep the ATM card in a safe place where it is not exposed to any damage. Stand directly in front of the ATM’s keypad when typing in your personal number to prevent other from seeing your personal information. (those waiting to use the ATM)
