Types of Chemical Reactions Chem Ch 11
2
5 general types of chemical reactions 1. Combination 2. Decomposition 3. Single Replacement 4. Double Replacement 5. Combustion
3
Combination Reaction Two or more chemicals combine to make one product. Sulfur + oxygen sulfur dioxide Hydrogen + oxygen water
4
More Combination examples ________ + ________ CuS (s) ________ + _________ Cu 2 S (s)
5
More Combination examples Mg (s) + N 2 (g) _______________ Fe (s) + O 2 (g) _________ Fe has +3
6
Decomposition reaction- the reverse of Combination One chemical reactant breaks into two or more products H 2 O (l) H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) 2HgO (s) 2 Hg (l) + O 2 (g)
7
Complete and balance the following decomposition reactions HI (l) _______ + _______ _____________ H 2 (g) + Br 2 (g)
8
Single Replacement Reactions See the reactivity series of metals table 11.2 page 333 The metal at the top of the list will replace metals below it in single replacement reactions. Lithium Potassium Calcium Sodium Magnesium Aluminum Zinc Iron Lead Hydrogen ion (H + ) Copper Mercury Silver
9
Single Replacement Reactions 2Na (s) + 2H 2 0 (l) 2NaOH (s) + H 2 (g) Lithium Potassium Calcium Sodium Magnesium Aluminum Zinc Iron Lead Hydrogen ion (H + ) Copper Mercury Silver
10
Single Replacement Reactions 2Na (s) + 2H 2 0 (l) 2NaOH (s) + H 2 (g) Lithium Potassium Calcium Sodium Magnesium Aluminum Zinc Iron Lead Hydrogen ion (H + ) Copper Mercury Silver
11
Single Replacement Reactions Which will react? Zn + Al(NO 3 ) 3 Al + Zn(NO 3 ) 2 Lithium Potassium Calcium Sodium Magnesium Aluminum Zinc Iron Lead Hydrogen ion (H + ) Copper Mercury Silver
12
Single Replacement Reactions Which will react? Al + NaCl K + LiNO 3 Lithium Potassium Calcium Sodium Magnesium Aluminum Zinc Iron Lead Hydrogen ion (H + ) Copper Mercury Silver
13
Double Replacement reaction A chemical change involving an exchange of positive ions between two ions. AgNO 3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) AgCl (s) + NaNO 3 (aq)
14
Double Replacement examples NaOH (aq) + Fe(NO 3 ) 3 (aq) Ba(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + H 3 PO 4 (aq)
15
Double Replacement examples KOH (aq) + H 3 PO 4 (aq) H 2 SO 4 (aq) + Al(OH) 3 (aq)
16
A double replacement reaction will be noticed when a precipitate is formed for one of the products See the Solubility Rules on page 344 Table 11.3 or the handouts provided.
17
Combustion Reactions A combustion reaction is a special type of Combination reaction. A combustion reaction occurs when a fuel or a metal reacts with Oxygen. If the fuel is organic, the products normally include CO 2 and H 2 O.
18
Examples of Combustion Reactions (unbalanced) H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) H 2 O (l) Mg (s) + O 2 (g) MgO (s)
19
Examples of Combustion Reactions (unbalanced) Al (s) + O 2 (g) Al 2 O 3 (s) C 3 H 8 (g) + O 2 (g) CO 2 (g) + H 2 O (g)
20
Examples of Combustion Reactions (unbalanced) C (s) + O 2 (g) CO 2 (g) CO (g) + O 2 (g) CO 2 (g)
