Metallic Solids 201 Chemistry
2
Kaupapa / Learning Outcome At the end of todays lesson I will be able to explain the properties of metallic solids using their structure and bonding.
3
Metals Eg. Copper, Zinc, Magnesium Low to high melting point Conducts electricity Malleable and ductile
4
Metallic solids Metals are malleable and ductile – Non-directional metallic bonds – It doesn’t matter how the particles are positions as long as they are surrounded by electrons – Malleable – pressed into shape – Ductile – pulled into wires
5
Conducts electricity Both metal solids and liquids conduct electricity Charge is carried by the delocalised electrons
6
Low to High Melting Point Metallic bonds vary in strength and depend on a number of things. – Size of the ions, charge of the ions and number of delocalised electrons
