What is Functional Genomics? Functional genomics is a field of molecular biology that enables exploration of genes, protein functions and interactions on a global scale. Functional genomics focuses on the dynamic aspects such as gene transcription, translation, and protein– protein interactions, as opposed to the static aspects of the genomic information such as DNA sequence or structures It is characterized by high-throughput or large-scale experimental methodologies combined with statistical or computational analysis of the results Tools for Functional Genomics At the DNA level DNA sequencing Genetic interaction mapping The ENCODE project At the RNA level: transcriptome profiling SAGE (Serial analysis of gene expression) Microarrays RNAseq GROseq At the protein level: protein–protein interactions Yeast two-hybrid system Affinity purification and mass spectrometry Loss-of-function / Gain-of-function techniques Mutagenesis RNAi (RNA interference)...shRNA ✔ cDNA / ORF ✔ Genome Editing ZFN TALEN CRISPR ✔ Functional annotations for genes Functional genomics and bioinformatics
