The National Weather Service has recorded tornadoes in all months of the year for the St. Louis area. Historically there is “peak” of activity in early March and then a long “peak” of activity from the beginning of April thru the middle of June. The majority of tornadoes have been recorded between 5:00 pm in the evening thru 2:00 am in the morning but can happen anytime during the day or night. Historically the six strongest tornadoes (F4) to hit the St. Louis area occurred on the following dates: 24 January 1967 20 December 1967 22 June 1969 4 March 1981 12 March 2006 22 April 2011 No F5 tornadoes have been recorded for the St. Louis area. Since 1962 there have been 505 tornadoes in the St. Louis region causing 25 fatalities and 696 injuries. Note: Over the last 30 years Missouri has averaged 39 tornadoes a year (statewide). Over the last 20 years Missouri has averaged 45 and over the last 10 years 61.
