Teacher may discuss the text with a small group or have students discuss with turn-and-talk partners while the teacher listens to the pairs’ conversations. 7

The teacher gives the students one or more text dependent questions to focus on before they begin their second reading. Teacher listens to discussions following the second read, to assess understanding.

Students may record their thinking in written form using graphic organizers, reading journals, sticky notes, etc. Teacher assesses students’ understanding of the text, and if they need further scaffolding to go beyond literal comprehension. 9

Some activities could include pattern sorting and proof readings. Word walls can be used for content vocabulary and social studies notebooks can be used to record the vocabulary words with images.

Write the word down at the top of the card and draw a picture of what you think the word means. Write the definition of the word Share with table Volunteer to share with large group 14

The steps of read aloud include: Pre Views- Making connections; guiding questions, checking for prior knowledge, anticipation guides During reading- guiding questions Post reading- check for understanding

Students facilitate their own learning by selecting additional books about the topic or content that is being covered. Students can extend learning by creating

Initially the teacher uses a familiar text for students to help them with the new content. Teacher reads from a big book sharing pictures and checking for prior understanding. What do you think our book will be about? Who has heard of Columbus?

This is a good way to hook students and get an idea if they have any connections or prior knowledge to social studies content of Explorers.
