Knowles uses a garden of Eden archetype through symbolism to illustrate the change from innocence to harsh reality that the boys experience. Through the Garden of Eden archetype, Knowles conveys the change from innocence to harsh reality. Devon adheres to the Garden of Eden archetype as the boys fall from innocence, just like Eve; using Finny’s fading influence at the school, Knowles conveys the inevitable loss of innocence.
