Introduction- Body- Conclusion

Main Points- Example: – Incorrect: I. West Texas has its own Grand Canyon, and South Texas has its own desert. – Correct: I. West Texas boasts its own Grand Canyon. II. South Texas boasts its own desert.

Principles of Organizing Main and Supporting Points- Unity- when it contains only those points implied by the purpose and thesis statements. Each main point supports the thesis, and each supporting point provides evidence for the main points. Each sub-supporting point supports each supporting point. Finally, each point should focus on a single idea. Coherence- when it is organized clearly and logically. The speech body should follow logically from the introduction, and the conclusion should follow logically from the body. Balance- The appropriate emphasis or weight be given to each part of the speech relative to the other parts and to the theme.

Arranging the Points- I. II. III. A. B. C. 1. 2. 3. a. b. c.

Arranging the Points- Each should have only one statement/idea/quote/story title/ect. If you have a sub-point you must have at least 3 to prove point. (Exp: 1.2.3. or A.B.C.) For this class please follow the Monroe Motivated Sequence for outlining your speeches.

Practice the Speech- Using your outline to practice will help you organize your thoughts and memorize your main points. Memorization of your thesis statements/quotes is imperative. For every minute of public speaking one hour of preparation should take place.
