Promotion tracks for academics (SAPT) These tracks are open to all staff DU and DUG (Clinical) DS and DUF (Science) 3 tracks in each pathway: Clinical Clinical (Excellence in clinical teaching & care) Teaching (Excellence in education) Research (Excellence in research) Science Standard Teaching (Excellence in education) Research (Excellence in research)

Guidelines for selecting an area of excellence Major area of achievement and impact (quantity + quality) Faculty staff had spent a substantial proportion of time and academic effort Influenced by how the staff views his/her career path Determined by the senior faculty member (Dean/HOD) with staff Everyone must do teaching, clinical service and research in differing quantum

Guidelines for promotion UM promotion system allows for the academic to be given the title of Associate Professor and Professor. As the staff moves from one level to the next, he or she will have to exhibit involvement and responsibility in an upward trajectory over time: 1. Associate Professor (53/54): Strong department/faculty reputation 2. Professor C (VK7): Strong faculty/university/national reputation 3. Professor B (VK6): Strong university/regional reputation 4. Professor A (VK5): Strong regional/international reputation

The SAPT (Clinical) The SAPT is a set of document to be used as a benchmark to assess the eligibility of a staff for promotion. Eligibility points is 80% and above. Divided into 3 tracks Each track has 5 pillars: Clinical Qualifications; Teaching; Research and Publication; Professional Services and Consultation; Administrative and Leadership (inc Awards and Recognition). Each pillar has a weight in percentage. Total percentage of all pillars is 100%. Each pillar will have a set of criteria. Each criterion has a point. Total points of each pillar is 100.

The SAPT (Clinical) All academics shall achieve 80% of the promotion criteria matrix (SAPT Clinical) in Component A of the chosen track to be eligible for consideration for promotion. Additional points to support the promotion may be garnered from additional activities in Component B. The stated criteria is cumulative from the start of professional career.

Current position Current staff on contract Based on criteria stipulated within their contracts Non-MalaysiansResearch Track at start of appointment. Change to another track is based on Dept/Faculty’s needs Current staff of all categories Acceptance of the tracks after discussion and agreement with the needs of the department, faculty and university. Must determine the track they wish to pursue by signing a document to that effect. 2-year term within the assigned and agreed track *Changes can only be made if there is approval from the Head of Department (HOD) and the Dean of the faculty. Each staff is allowed maximum of TWO (2) times of changing tracks. Future lecturers, senior lecturers, Assoc. professors and professors Will need to be employed based on the needs of the faculty or department and will be required to adhere to a particular track. Changes can only be made if there is approval from the HOD and the Dean of the faculty in exceptional cases. *Appointment to Another Track A staff member may request for a transfer to another track after a period of not less than 2 years. The HOD will ordinarily initiate such requests for appointment to another track, with the concurrence of the faculty member. This change in the track with incur the following restrictions: Such requests follow the same procedures as if they were initial appointments and will need to be approved by the Dean. Upon achieving an appointment to the new track, the faculty member shall be evaluated based on the criteria of new track. Time accrued on the previous track will not be applied towards time in rank for promotion.

Total points of each pillar is dependent of its percentage.

The SAPT (Science) Eligibility for promotion requires 85% overall points, with a minimum of 70% for combined ‘Teaching & Supervision’ and ‘Research & Publication’ Staff may accrue BONUS points to make up the 85% and above for eligibility Bonus points accounts for maximum 5 extra points IPR/Copyright Books/Chapters in book Entrepreneurial achievement Teaching/publications above minimum requirements Awards For DUF, additional 5 points max for 8hrs/week clinical work

The SAPT (Science) All academics shall achieve 85% of the promotion criteria matrix (SAPT Science) in any chosen track to be eligible for consideration for promotion. Additional points (max=5; max=10 for DUF with clinical work) to be accumulated as BONUS points. The stated criteria is cumulative from the start of professional career.
