Student Admission Process: Eligibility for Classification as a Resident for Tuition Purposes Carlo Yoedono Houston, November 2015

College Admission Timeline Spring (Jan – May)Summer (May – Aug)Fall (Aug – Dec) Preparation Fall (Prior Year): o Register for and take ACT and/or SAT Tests. o Research & visit Colleges or Universities, note application deadlines. o Prepare Essays and Teachers’ Recommendation. o Submit College / University’s applications in timely manner. Spring: o Get responses for College/University (accepted or not) o Make final decision and follow registration process o Prepare and submit parent’s Tax Return (including ITIN) o Submit application to reclassify student’s residency status (if applicable) College or University Academic Calendar Payment Deadline Class Begin Census Day

Background: o Applicable only for Colleges and Universities in state of Texas o The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Rule 21.25: Student to respond to a set of residency questions and to submit required data to be submitted after registration is complete. 12 months attending public college/university with a Texas resident classification will be considered as resident. Other considerations: graduation from Texas HS, living in Texas for 36 months prior to graduation or living in Texas for 12 months prior to begin the semester, filing income tax (as independent or dependent), Visa status (please note that some Vise types are not eligible to domicile in the U.S., such as: F1/F2), Parent or Guardian status (residency & occupancy) Residency Reclassification

Required Documents Documents that may support establishment and maintenance of domicile in Texas (at least 12 consecutive months preceding the Census Date): o Visa, passport or other pertinent immigration documents o Texas HS Transcript or other Texas Institution o Utility Bill or Housing Lease Agreement o Texas Driver License, Bank Statement, Credit Report, etc. o An employer’s statement of dates of employment in Texas and salary stubs o Tax Return of the student or parent (claiming student as dependent) o Ownership of residential real property or business entity

o By default, all non US citizen/permanent resident is classified as International Student. o Complete Questionnaire and required documents as soon as possible to the right contact person (office of enrollment or the registrar or the student services), by mail or email. o Allow processing time from 2 – 4 weeks (consider to submit it at least 1 month prior to the Census Date). o Notification will sent to the student by mail or email. o If notification is received after the Census Date, it will be effective starting the next semester. o You will pay tuition much more less when status is approved as a Resident Do Not Wait...!!!
