POINT > List characteristics of mollusks Mollusks are invertebrates with soft bodies Many mollusks have a shell that protects the body Bilateral symmetry: head and tail ends Mollusks have a layer of tissue called a mantle. The mantle covers their internal organs and makes the shell Mollusks have a muscular organ called a foot. The foot is used for movement and catching food Many mollusks live in water and have gills. Gills are organs that absorb oxygen from the water (like our lungs do from air)
4
WB CHECK: What are 3 characteristics of mollusks? What do gills do? What is the foot? What does the mantle do?
5
POINT > Identify 3 classes of mollusks Class 1: Gastropods Class 2: Bivalves Class 3: Cephalopods
6
POINT > Describe gastropods Gastropods live on land, in fresh water and seawater Gastropods have either one shell or no shell Some gastropods are herbivores. Herbivores are animals that only eat plants Some gastropods are carnivores. Carnivores are animals that eat meat. Gastropods eat using an organ called a radula. The radula can tear through plant or meat (like teeth) Gastropods have a large foot for movement
7
WB CHECK: What are 3 classes of mollusks? What is a carnivore? What is an herbivore? What do gastropods use the radula for? Where do gastropods live?
8
POINT > Identify 3 classes of mollusks Class 1: Gastropods Gastropods include snails (with shell) and slugs (no shell)
9
POINT > Describe bivalves Bivalves have two shells held together by a hinge Most bivalves get food by filtering tiny organisms from the water. All bivalves live in the water. Most bivalves are omnivores. Omnivores eat plants and animals. Bivalves include clams, oysters, scallops and mussels The mantle of some bivalves make pearls
10
POINT > Identify 3 classes of mollusks Class 2: Bivalves
11
POINT > Describe cephalopods Cephalopods include octopus, squid, and nautilus The foot organ of cephalopods is modified into tentacles for catching food. Cephalopods are carnivores. Cephalopods can have an outer shell, an inner shell or no shell Cephalopods have excellent eyesight are highly intelligent Cephalopods use speed and camouflage to hide from danger. Camouflage makes an animal look like it is not there
12
POINT > Identify 3 classes of mollusks Class 3: Cephalopods Squid OctopusNautilus
13
WB CHECK: Which group of mollusks are highly intelligent? What group of mollusks are clams in? What are tentacles? How many shells do bivalves have? What type of mollusks make pearls?
