Empire All of the combined territory of a powerful nation.

Flood A great flowing or overflowing of water, especially over land not usually submerged.

Irrigation The artificial application of water to land to assist in the production of crops.

Monotheism The belief that there is only one God.

Theocracy A government ruled by religious leaders who claim a god’s (or God’s) authority.

Temple A place dedicated to the worship of a god or many gods.

Monument An obelisk, statue, building, etc., created to memorialize a person or event.

Nobles People belonging to a privileged social or political class whose status is usually indicated by a title.

Bureaucracy The officials & administrators of a government.

Delta A triangular region formed at the mouth of a river by deposits of silt.

Pyramids Typically used as a tomb for ancient Egyptian pharaohs.

Mastabas A type of ancient Egyptian tomb; a flat-roofed, rectangular structure; marked the burial site of many important Egyptians.

Corvée Labor Often unpaid labor; required of people of lower social status & imposed on them by the state or a superior; the earliest & most widespread form of taxation.

Mummification The process of preserving the body with chemicals after death.
