Democratic governments Parliamentary and presidential

Democracy  In a democracy, the government is “Ruled by the people”  There are two forms of democracy  Direct Democracy – People vote on all the issues.  Representative Democracy – People elect representatives and give them the power to vote on issues.  Example: United States

Democratic Governments  There are two major forms of democratic governments:  Parliamentary  Presidential

Parliamentary  The real executive power vested in the cabinet  Cabinet composed of members of the legislature who are individually and collectively responsible to the legislature  May have a Prime Minister that is elected by the legislature  Ex: Turkey

Presidential  The president is constitutionally independent of the legislature  Citizens vote for the president

PRESIDENTIAL FORM OF DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT  The President is chosen separately from the legislature. The legislature passes the laws and the President sees that the laws are enforced. The President is the official head of Government and is in a separate branch of government (unlike Parliamentary). The President serves for a set period of time. PARLIAMENTARY FORM OF DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT  The people vote for those who represent the political party they feel best represents their views of how government should operate.  They elect the legislature.  The Parliament makes and carries out the laws.  The party that wins the majority of votes chooses the leader – Prime Minister/Premier. He is now head of the executive branch & member of parliament. Also, Prime Minister can be voted out if he loses power (unlike Presidential form of government) Often, there is also a Head of State (ceremonial) EX. Jordan (King is Chief of State) Israel (Knesset –legislative body) Israel (Knesset –legislative body)
