TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING IMOGEN MARTIN, NINA RIGGIO, CONNOR HAGAN, NICHOLE SMITH

CLAUDIUS TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING

CLAUDIUS “My words fly up, my thoughts, remain below. Words without thought never to heaven go” (3.3.98) Before this is said, Claudius is praying and expressing guilt and remorse for killing King Hamlet. Hamlet was planning on killing Claudius at that moment, but when he sees Claudius praying, he chooses not to kill him as he believes it would send him straight to heaven. After Hamlet leaves, Claudius then says ^, expressing that his feelings are not true. His words show morals or goodness, but his actual thoughts remain sinister. His thoughts differ from his words; appearance is different from reality

CLAUDIUS “He’s loved of the distracted multitude, who like not in their judgment, but their eyes.” (4.3.5) Claudius says people like Hamlet because of his appearance, not his real personality Contrast between appearance and reality.

CLAUDIUS Acts like he cares about Hamlet, but real talk he doesn’t. “bend you to remain/ here in the cheer and comfort of our eye” (1.2)

HAMLET TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING

HAMLET Act 4 Scene 3 [End]: Hamlet: “For England?” King: “Ay Hamlet” Hamlet: “Good”

HOT HAM AND CHEESE “The body is with the king, but the king is not with the body.” (4.2.25) Claudius has the title of king (the body is with the king), but Claudius is not fulfilling the role of king (the king is not with the body)

HAMLET Hamlet acts crazy Is he really cray?

HAMLET “Doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt that the sun doth move, doubt truth to be a liar, but never doubt I love”

HAMLET Hamlet talks to Polonius about clouds. Is Hamlet really crazy? Why does Polonius go along with it? Ambiguity about the correlation between his actions and his true feelings. (3.2.346)

POLONIUS TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING

POLONIUS “Believe so much in him that he is young, and with a larger tether may he walk than may be given you. In few, Ophelia, do not believe his vows, for they are brokers not of that dye which their investments show, but mere implorators of unholy suits…” (1.3.124)

POLONIUS “This above all: to thine own self be true” (1.3.78)

POLONIUS “I saw him enter a house of sale; Videlicet, a brothel, or so forth” (2.1) Polonius is talking to Ronaldo about spying on Laertes, and spreading rumors about Hamlet doing bad things like gambling and going to brothels etc. In the movie version, at this moment, Polonius sends away his prostitute who has been sitting in the background for a while.  Not doing what he is telling other people to do (hypocrisy)

POLONIUS Polonius acts like he is convinced that Hamlet loves Ophelia, and tries to convince others of this. We can assume that he is doing this because he knows that if Hamlet does love Ophelia, it helps in financially, and puts him in a higher position in the court

OPHELIA TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING

O-THUG “Could beauty, my lord, have better commerce that with honesty?” (3.1.111)

O-MONAY Does she love Hamlet? Her actions suggest that she does not because she ignores him, but we know what she really feels because when Hamlet insults her, (“get thee to a nunnery”) she is very hurt and says “Oh heavenly powers, restore him” (3.1).

OQUANDA Her appearance is that she is “fair Ophelia” etc., but on the inside, she is going crazy Her songs reveal her true thoughts about the situation with her father and Hamlet. “You promised me to wed by yonder sun, and thou hadst not come to my bed” (4.5)

QUEEN GERTYGERT TENSIONS IN THOUGHT, ACTION, SPEECH, APPEARANCE, AND FEELING

G-UNIT “Mad as the seas, and wind, when both contend which is the mightier” (4.1.7) It’s ambiguous to whether the Queen actually believes Hamlet is crazy or if she cover up for Hamlet. Does she really think he is crazy?
