4. Social Work with Core  Quantitative Analysis SSW Requirement: STAT 103, CJC 206, PSYC 304 (BSW majors only), SOCL 301 or ISOM 241  Scientific Literacy Tier 2 SSW Requirements: ANTH 101, ANTH 103, ANTH 105 ANTH 106, BIOL 110, ENVS 204, ENVS 281  Societal and Cultural Knowledge Tier 1 and Tier 2 SSW Requirements: –SOCL 101 and PSYC 101 (can be taken in first semester together)  Engaged Learning SSW Requirement: –SOWK 340 (Beginning to put theory to practice)

5. First Year Schedule Creating a balanced schedule based on your strengths and interests is most important. Starting to take CORE courses in the first semester gives you more flexibility in following semesters. SOWK 200 Introduction and SOWK 201 Social Policy I can be taken in the sophomore year.

6. Academic and Collaborative Learning  Service Learning & Volunteer Component- –SOWK 200 Freshman year- students will gain an understanding of social work and social services through historical and current societal and political contexts: includes a full semester of volunteer experience and personal reflection  Internships –Students apply for an internship at the end of their junior year –480 hours of fieldwork = 240hrs per fall/spring terms =16 hours per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the full academic year –SOWK 330+340: Provide a structured practice experience in a social agency where students will begin to integrate theory with practice –Internship coordinator will work individually with each student to successfully connect them with one our over 500 field placement partnerships –SOWK 350: Integrative Seminar Senior Year: Provides opportunity to further deepen the integration of social work theory to social work practice in order to help the student develop a professional identity which allows students to transition from social work education to professional practice or graduate school.

7. Student-Faculty Interaction  Research Opportunities –Grant funded research opportunities: –Provost’s Fellows: Early spring faculty will send announcements seeking assistance with research/grant projects –Junior Year: –SOWK 390: Research Methods It is important to not only know how to do research but also to know how to critique it. Learn how to ask questions to dig deeper into what statistics are actually saying or how the are being used. –Volunteering for faculty research –SOWK 360: Independent Study senior year –Focus on a particular interest or area of study with the field of social work. Research based and 20-30 page paper due at the end, great opportunity to working directly with a faculty member who is interested in what you want to research.  Faculty in SSW –Tenured and Clinical Faculty –Adjuncts traditionally have long-standing dual roles with the SSW –Office Hours: Refer to your syllabus  Symposium & Lectures –Greenstone Lecture & Teach-In’s –Guest lecturers who come to campus to provide additional learning opportunities for free.

10. 5-Year Program  The School of Social Work 5-year BSW/MSW program allows students to complete both levels of social work education in 5 years. It is only offered to Loyola University BSW majors.  All undergraduates in the BSW program will move into the MSW specialization the year after receiving their undergraduate degree if they meet the following requirements: 1.Cumulative GPA of 3.0 at start of senior year 2.Average of 3.25 GPA in social work courses 3.Minimum grades of “B” in SOWK 301 and SOWK 330 4.BSW degree completed no later than end of summer session of senior year  Students must “opt out” in order to receive their BSW degree and not continue on to the MSW program.
