3
Our Client and The Problem The Toronto Worker’s Health and Safety Legal Clinic. The Leaping Lawyer of Bay Street. Need a design that enhances safety and secures mass for curtain walls found within high rise buildings. [1] The design needs to ensure that strength and durability of the window.
4
Key Safety Factors Internal Load Corrosion Wind Load [2]
5
Key Objectives Safety Durability
6
The Design Steel Bar Corrosion Coupons
7
Guarding from Internal Loading ●Steel bars prevent unintended loadings ●Durable ●Can be implemented with minor changes to the building
8
Satisfying the Need ●Mass secured inside the building ●Safe, Durable ●Cost effective ($2-$4 per kilogram)[3]
9
Corrosion Monitoring What is it? ●A system used to monitor the amount of corrosion that occurs ●Determines rate of corrosion, which is a big factor in window strength
10
Corrosion Coupons ●Corrosion tags are thin strips of metal ●Indicator of when to change the frames ●Purchased from commercial vendors $175[4] [5]
11
The process
12
How it meets our goals? ● Meets the need to secure mass, durability and strength [6]
13
What's the Design? Again. Our final design: ● contains two parts ● Steel bars ● Corrosion monitoring ● Keeps curtain wall strong and prevents loading
14
Considerations Things need to consider: ● Environmental impact ● meets specific codes and regulations ● economic cost for this design ● corrosion coupons:$175 ● safety bars:$2-$4 per kg ● labour cost
15
Concluding Message ● Recommendation: Reduce the risk of this accident ● Take-away: Would you want to be in an unsafe building? no one would.
