Naming Covalent Compounds Covalent compounds consist of Two non-metals
3
Prefixes-stand for the amount of atoms present 4141-- mono 4242-- di 4343-- tri 4-- tetra 4545-- penta 4 6-- hexa 4 7-- hepta 4 8-- octa 4 9-- nona 41410-- deca
4
2 Steps to Naming Covalent Compounds 1. Name the first non-metal.
5
If there is only one atom present DO NOT use a prefix. If there is more than one atom present then you must use the correct prefix.
6
Examples: CO 2 Carbon N2O5N2O5 Dinitrogen
7
2. Name the second non-metal using the correct prefix and an -ide ending
8
Examples: CO 2 N2O5N2O5 Carbon Dioxide Dinitrogen Pentoxide
9
You try... Cl 2 O
10
You try... Cl 2 O Dichlorine monoxide
11
CO Carbon Monoxide PCl 3 Phosphorus Trichloride CI 4 Carbon Tetriodide
12
Writing Molecular Formulas Phosphorous Trichloride PCl 3
13
N3N3 Trinitrogen CCl 4 Carbon Tetrachloride
