Naming Ionic Compounds
2
Rules Name the metallic ion (cation) 1 st (whole name) Name the nonmetallic ion (anion) 2 nd, but change the ending to “ide” The total charge in the ionic compound must always equal zero. Criss cross the ionic charges (Write down the formula and if necessary, reduce to lowest terms) nonmetallic ion name F-F- fluoride Cl - chloride Br - bromide I-I- iodide O 2- oxide S 2- sulfide N 3- nitride P 3- phosphide

Examples 1. lithium & fluorine : _________ name: ________________ 2. calcium & sulfur : _________ name:________________ 3. magnesium & chlorine : ______________ → ____________________ 4. aluminum oxide : ______________ LiFlithium fluoride CaS calcium sulfide MgCl 2 magnesium chloride Li + F - Ca 2+ S 2- Mg 2+ Cl - Al 3+ O 2- Al 2 O 3
4
Examples 5. sodium oxide : ______________ 6. potassium nitride : ____________ Na 2 O K3NK3N Na + O 2- K + N 3-
5
Practice Write the formula for: 1. lithium oxide 2.aluminum phosphide 3.beryllium nitride Be 3 N 2 Be 2+ N 3- Li + O 2- Li 2 O Al 3+ P 3- AlP Name the following: 4. K 2 S potassium sulfide 5. CaO calcium oxide 6. MgBr 2 magnesium bromide
