Addition polymers- what can you work out?
Plastics are examples of addition polymers that are formed in a free radical addition mechanism. Poly(ethene) and poly(propene) are examples shown below: Question 1- C-C and C-H bonds are very strong. A) Suggest the impact this has on the reactivity and durability of addition polymers. B) Explain the disadvantage of your answer to A). How are addition polymers formed? How are addition polymers formed from monomers?
Example- forming poly(ethene) from ethene Describe what happens during the reaction. The mechanism is free radical addition mechanism (you don’t need to learn the details of this mechanism!)
