E NTRY T ASK We have been investigating 3 different liquids – water, isopropyl alcohol, and baby oil Which substances were soluble in each other? Which substances were not soluble in each other? What do you think determines if a substance is soluble in another?

H IGHLIGHT C OMMENTS What I seeWhat it means 3 separate lines showing mass and volume Three different substances with three different densities Each line has positive slopeAs volume increases so does mass. All lines are straightDensity is constant for all 3 substances Water has the steepest slopeWater is the most dense Baby oil has the least slopeBaby oil is the least dense Alcohol is between water and baby oil Alcohol is more dense than baby oil, but less dense than water All lines start at zero0 mL of volume must have 0g mass

S TOP & T HINK How do graphs help us “see” density? On a graph it is easy to see steepness, or differences in slope. Since the slope of the line corresponds to the density of the substance, we can “see” the density. A steeper line means a higher density. A less steep line means a lower density. You can compare the slope of the lines and see which substance is more dense than another.
