What are Explorers? Who discovered the “New World?” Why did people come to the “New World?” How did these conquistadors and explorers get to the “New World?” Why do you think it was so important that these people made it to the “New World?”

3 Spanish Missions (Texas)
Religious communities established by Spanish Catholics to convert the Native Americans Friar- Catholic- Member of a religious community of men living under vows. Prisidio- Ordained minister of hierarchical Christian Churches (Catholic Minister/Father) Mission- Only accepted religion in Spain during the exploration and colonization periods. Secondary Sources- A military base (fort) Filibusters- Military adventurers who came to Texas from the US in the early 1800’s Primary Sources- is a document, speech, or other sort of evidence written, created or otherwise produced during the time under study. Priest- are one step removed from the original event

5 Corpus Christi de la Isleta (Ysleta) (1682)
First Spanish mission in Texas; east of El Paso oldest European town in Texas (1682)

6 San Francisco de los Tejas (1690)
First mission in east Texas; west of Neches River; built by de Leon and Massanet as a mission for Tejas Indians

7 San Antonio de Valero (1718)
Mission built by the Spanish near the San Antonio River (this later became the site of the siege of the Alamo) Martin de Alarcon Governor of Spanish Texas who helped build San Antonio de Valero.

8 La Bahia (1721) Presidio & mission built by Aguayo near Matagorda Bay;
Later moved farther inland near Goliad

1. You are a Friar and it is your job to convert Native Americans. Write a letter to the King telling him how the progress of converting the Native Americans is going be sure to give reasons why the Native Americans are or are not converting. 2. You are a Native American and you have entered a Mission. Write a letter to your chief telling him how the Spanish are treating you and if you are going to convert be sure to make sure that you give reasons why or why not you will be converted. 3. You are a Friar that is assigned to the New World. Write a letter to the King asking him to allow you to join the mission of your choice be sure to let him know why you want to go to that mission and what you plan to do when you get there. 4. You are a Native American and you have found are in a mission. Write a letter to the Friar that is trying to convert you giving him reasons that you will not be joining the Catholic faith. 5. You get to pick your question 6. The Teacher picks your question
