GETTING FAMILIAR WITH SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE During this session you will: Understand what social infrastructure is Learn the benefits of social infrastructure Work in teams to develop ideas for social infrastructure that would benefit a community in rural Ontario Present your ideas to the Summit audience

WHAT IS SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE? The web of public services and institutions that are funded by any level of government (federal, provincial or municipal) to support the development and health of a community Examples: schools, hospitals, public transit systems, affordable housing, libraries, community centres…etc.

BENEFITS OF SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE Quality social infrastructure supports the well-being of a community and its residents Quality local services and facilities serve as a magnet for residents and businesses to a community

YOUR TASK FOR THE NEXT 45 MINUTES As a team, select one of the social infrastructure areas below that you would like to see developed for an ideal community Healthcare Education, training and skills development Public transportation Sports, recreation and youth Tourism and arts and culture Connectivity services Housing

YOUR TASK FOR THE NEXT 45 MINUTES Use the sheet provided and come up with 3 creative options for the social infrastructure area you have selected: – 1 no cost option ($0) – 1 low cost option ($) – 1 high cost option ($$$) Teams will be randomly selected to report on their social infrastructure options to the Summit

FOR EXAMPLE: OPTIONSPROS/CONS No cost ($0) Create a partnership with service clubs that offer volunteer drivers for community members (i.e. seniors) List off pros and cons for each of the options… Low cost ($) Pool resources among neighbouring communities to charter a bus for special events … High cost ($$$) Launch a regional public transit service … Social Infrastructure Area: “Public Transportation” Be bold and creative but consider the ROI for each option
