The Waves of Feminism The First Wave of Feminism o Took place during the 19 th century and early 20 th century o Suffrage The Second Wave of Feminism o Began in the 1960s through the 1990s o Sexuality and reproductive rights o Social equality regardless of sex

The First Wave 19th century and early 20th century Middle-class White women Focus on legal issues Women’s suffrage Domestic sphere Women were viewed as mentally and physically fragile creatures Their role as women meant they belonged in the home taking care of their children and husbands Femininity The Seneca Falls Convention (1848) Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Lucretia Mott 300 women & men came together When did women finally gain the vote? 1920

The Second Wave Began in the 1960s through the 1990s More diversity in women Social Expectations of Women WWII & Cold War The perfect wife and mother The Feminine Mystique Betty Friedan The problem that has no name What were women fighting for? Change social and cultural expectations Equal Rights Amendment Anti-Feminism Women came together to reject the demands by feminist Formed their own social movements
