4 James Meredith African American air force veteran who applied to attend Univ of Mississippi Governor refused, Kennedy sent 500 marshals to escort Meredith to class Angry mob attacked, used tear gas, people worried gov’t was losing control of situation

5 Emmett Till- summer 1955 14-year-old Emmett Till was visiting relatives in Mississippi he reportedly flirted with a white cashier at a grocery store Four days later, two white men kidnapped Till, beat him and shot him in the head. The men were tried for murder, but an all-white, male jury acquitted them. Till's murder and open casket funeral fired up the emerging Civil Rights Movement.
