What is GOGI? GOGI is a non-profit organization founded by Coach Mara Leigh Taylor. Coach Taylor believes that every human is capable of making positive decisions and is dedicated to the teaching of the Twelve Tools of GOGI, simple cognitive and behavioral tools for positive decision making. She is also committed to the practice of Yoga and welcomed the opportunity to integrate the intellectual learning with the physical practice of GOGI Yoga. GOGI is dedicated to the education and empowerment of incarcerated individuals.
3
What is GOGI Yoga? GOGI Yoga takes the 12 tools of GOGI and combines them with physical practices for the body, breathing techniques, and meditation.
4
12 Tools of GOGI Yoga The Body - BOSS OF MY BRAIN - BELLY BREATHING - POSITIVE WORDS - POSITIVE ACTIONS The Mind - FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH - CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY - POSITIVE THOUGHTS - WHAT IF The Spirit - LET GO - FORGIVE - REALITY CHECK - ULTIMATE FREEDOM
5
BOSS OF MY BRAIN I am BOSS OF MY BRAIN. I have control over my mind and how I think when I use BOSS OF MY BRAIN. No one has control over my mind. I am the boss.
6
BELLY BREATHING I take control of situations with BELLY BREATHING. My body needs the BELLY BREATHING air to make positive decisions.
7
POSITIVE WORDS I focus on POSITIVE WORDS. I reveal who I am with POSITIVE WORDS. I remain silent if I cannot speak POSITIVE WORDS.
8
POSITIVE ACTIONS I transform my world through my POSITIVE ACTIONS. I list 5 POSITIVE ACTIONS daily.
9
CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY I CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY for my re-actions and I CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY for my actions. I am in charge of my life.
10
FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH I overcome automatic thinking using FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH. I use FIVE SECOND LIGHTSWITCH to respond peacefully and positively.
11
POSITIVE THOUGHTS Anything I put my mind to is possible. I maintain POSITIVE THOUGHTS in difficult or challenging situations.
12
WHAT IF I ask myself WHAT IF? WHAT IF I reached my goal? What IF I actually improved my life? WHAT IF I am not my past?
13
LET GO I LET GO of past pain. I LET GO of things which hold me back. I am free when I LET GO.
14
FORGIVE I forgive myself for not being perfect, for making mistakes, and for harming others. I forgive myself and others who have harmed me.
15
REALITY CHECK I quickly correct mistakes with REALITY CHECK. Change is a process and REALITY CHECK allows me to accept process of change.
16
ULTIMATE FREEDOM I am ULTIMATE FREEDOM in action. The Ultimate Freedom is serving others everyday.

Inmate Feedback Having been incarcerated and sedentary for so many months, it’s been wonderful to be able to breath again, feel my body again and be confident and strong again. The affirmations helped me learn how to focus and turn everything over to my higher power.

Facilitator Feedback Teaching GOGI Yoga to the beautiful women at VSP reminded me that ultimate liberation is within. It is not dictated by our circumstance, whether that be a western lifestyle or a life behind bars. Either circumstance can leave us feeling trapped and helpless, but through out practice we come to realize our innate freedom. I hope we can continue to bring yoga to incarcerated women. -Pranidhi Varshney It is rewarding to be involved with any project that helps others help themselves. GOGI Yoga is the type of program that could indeed help “heal” what plagues this society. I was uplifted by the women and encouraged by their apparent understanding and willingness to embrace the 12 tools. With gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference. -Judy Deierling Many of the women were new to GOGI Yoga and had that sparkle and smile many of us have seen on the faces of many new yogis at the end of their first class. Prison didn’t change any of that magic. These were women from various backgrounds and educations, some in their twenties, some in their seventies, and everything in between. But what struck me was, they seemed no different than myself or my UCLA community where I usually teach. -Brenda Johnson
