2 The Close Read lesson gives adult students the practical skills necessary to make meaning in context. We have found the Close Read lesson to be a powerful tool for language instructors in our program. We are here to share it with you.

3 WNC Adult Literacy and Language program objectives focus on ELL and HSE literacy for career, college, and workplace readiness. The Close Read supports student and program goals through a deep focus on making meaning in context.

6 1. The Close Read 2. Elements of a Model Classroom The text-based approach of the Close Read and relevant DOK questions can transform a classroom.

7 Begins with complex text At the appropriate reading level for your students With relevant content and craft Includes vocabulary support And text-based DOK questions

8 Readworks and Newsela are good online sources Or evaluate text with: Online tools (Lexile, ATOS, Reading Maturity, etc) Rubrics are also available online (nevadaadulted.org, ccssso.org) The most time-consuming part of preparation is selecting relevant, well-crafted, complex text.

9 Employ depth-of-knowledge (DOK) framework Drive students deep into context Support vocabulary growth Improve test-taking skills Publishers are catching on Rubrics to hone your questions

10 Jody will take you through a close read.

11 1) Create 4 text-based questions from the text, one for each DOK level. 2) Discuss the questions at your table and use the rubric to evaluate them. 3) Extra Credit: Create a Culminating Task Given the text, the rubric for evaluating question quality, and the DOK reference on screen;
