Good Morning! Please have a seat. Don’t plug in your laptop. No point. Don’t even open them. Seriously, you’re going to have to move soon and who needs that hassle?

Survey Results Areas of confidence: Areas needing more polish:
4
Goals for the Day With our grade level groups we will: – Review content area for our grade level module – Modify/build code for each of the lessons in our module – Practice using the forms provided to guide the computational modeling process – Run the activities included in our module
5
Preview Models Earth Science – Climate Change and Greenhouse Gases Life Science – Rabbits and Grass and Mountain Lions Physical Science – Chemical Reaction
6
Student Activity Papercatchers Participatory Simulation of population growth
7
Student Activity Papercatchers Crumple up a piece of scrap paper Pick one person to represent the 1 st member of the population In one color, mark the table and graph with generation 0, population 1 When you hear “next generation!”, the 1 st member throws the paper 2 feet overhead and tries to catch it
8
Student Activity Papercatchers If the 1 st member catches it, they survive! And they reproduce by picking an audience member to be the 2 nd member of the population If the 1 st member doesn’t catch the paper, they die! And they sit down. Repeat for several generations
9
Student Activity Papercatchers If the population crashes begin again! Sometimes if populations are small, populations go extinct by chance. Once everyone is part of the population, it’s time to look at the graph and reflect on the pattern! What type of pattern do you see? What would happen if we could play with an unlimited number of people?
10
Student Activity Papercatchers Round 2! Same as before, but you have to keep your foot on the piece of poster board. What do you think will happen to the pattern you saw before? Use a different color marker to record population sizes and generation numbers. What happened in Round 2?
11
Student Activity Papercatchers Round 3! The poster board is now a sheet of printer paper. What do you think will happen? What do you think the shape of the population curve will be? Record with a different color marker.
12
Student Activity Papercatchers Feedback loops in brief Positive feedback: (reinforcing) more leads to more less leads to less Negative feedback: (balancing) more leads to less less leads to more
