Plants Essential Question:
What adaptations have enabled plants to survive Earths changing environments?
2
Objectives Students should be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of plants. 2. Recognize the various life cycles of plants. 3. Describe how seed plants grow and reproduce. 4. Compare and contrast gymnosperms and angiosperms. 5. Identify parts of a flower. 6. Describe how plants respond to their environment. 7. Describe the importance of plants to the environment and our lives. 8. Describe the various life processes that plant cells undergo. 9. Explain how a plant obtains and uses energy.

Plant Characteristics
They make their own food Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll Chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sun Plants use the energy to make food - glucose (sugar) Process is called Photosynthesis
5
Chloroplasts:
6
Plant Characteristics
Plant Cells have Cell Walls
7
What is a Cell Wall a plant cell is surrounded by a rigid cell wall
outside of the cell membrane helps support and protect the plant
8
Plant Characteristics
Plants reproduce sexually and asexually with spores (asexually) gametes or sex cells (sexually)
9
Asexual Reproduction: Spores
A plant in the spore producing stage of life. Spores can grow directly into an adult plant
10
Sexual Reproduction: gametes (sex cells)
Male and female sex cells must join in order to grow into a new plant. This is called Fertilization.

Plants Classification
There are more than 260,000 species of plants. They can be divided into two groups: Nonvascular Vascular

Plants are Classified into TWO groups
Vascular Plants Nonvascular Plants
14
Plants are Classified into TWO groups
Nonvascular Plants: have no pipes to transport water and nutrients depend on diffusion and osmosis to move material from one part of the plant to another They have to be small: mosses, liverworts
15
Liverwort Mosses
16
Vascular Plants Have tissues that deliver needed materials throughout a plant - called vascular tissues. Can be almost any size. Are divided into gymnosperms and angiosperms
17
Gymnosperms--non-flowering plants
18
Angiosperms -- flowering plants
