Lesson 1.4 ORDER OF OPERATIONS Order of Operations

Aim: How can we use order of operations to simplify expressions?  Learning Objectives  Students will:  Evaluate expressions using the order of operations on +, –, ×, and ÷.  Use mental arithmetic to evaluate expressions

Aim: How can we use order of operations to simplify expressions?  Do Now:  1. Name the property that lets you write: 35 + 5 = 5 + 35  2. Use mental math to find each sum.  35 + 17 + 5  28 + 9 + 4  124 + 25 + 26

18 + 11 x 6 = (18 + 11) x 6 = 29 x 6 = 174 18 + 11 x 6 = 18 + (11 x 6) = 18 + 66 = 84 What do you notice? What do you wonder? Write at least 3 statements A B

Find the value of each expression.  A) 6 + 96 ÷ 3  B) 30 – (6 + 2) x 3  C) 34 + 5 x 2 - 17

Aim: Create a numerical expression for each model. Determine whether the two expressions are equivalent. If so what property is applied? How can we use order of operations to simplify expressions?

 Name the property used in the statement 1. 25 + 27 + 15= 25 + 15 +27

Give a reason to justify each step 1. (4 × 9) × 5 = (9x4) X 5 _____________________ 9 x (4X5)____________________ 9 x 20__________________ 180 __________________ Use mental math to find: 1. 50 x 7 x 2 2. (25 × 9) × 8

Four running clubs raised money in a 24-hour relay race. Club A ran 183 miles. Club B ran 144 miles, Club C ran 117 miles, and Club D ran 146 miles. What was the total number of miles that all four clubs ran?  Which pairs of numbers can you add using mental math?  What is the sum of each of those pairs?

Use expressions to solve problems  What is the total cost of the items including the tax? Create an expression to model this diagram. ITEMS ORDERED JEANS3$35 EACH SHIRTS4$15 EACH TAX DISCOUNT $10.00 - $5.00

Practice 1.4  All-in-One Student Workbook  Page 197 & 198  * DO NOT write in the workbooks. All examples must be done in your notebook.

Exit Ticket  A student says that the value of the expression 5 + 25 ÷ 5= 6  What error did the student make?
