2 Book Club Goals Encourage UIC students to engage with written English outside the context of class. Create an independent reading community for UIC students to participate in. Increase UIC students’ awareness of the variety and richness of written English. Develop UIC students’ writing skills by providing accessible input for modeling.

3 Book Club Goals To teach reading fluency To show students that it is possible to read without using bilingual electronic dictionaries That the reading fluency achieved by not using dictionaries will lead to: – faster reading and the ability to read academic texts quickly – more natural and fluent writing skills.

4 Location Learning Resource Centre (LRC) Main Floor Book Club Corner – Graded Reader Collection – Consultation and Reading Area Presentation Room – Electronic Presentations Group Study Rooms – Group Discussions / Activities

5 Graded Readers Graded readers are books specially written to be readable at different language levels. A wide variety of genres and styles of writing are available in graded reader format from various publishers. Novels seem to be the most popular form of graded readers. Students need to be informed of the purpose, advantages, and types of graded readers.

7 Levels and Level Testing Graded Readers are Written at Different Levels Headwords – a.k.a. “Word Families” Various Publishers – Different Level Classifications Level Appropriate Activities In-Text – Graded Readers Contain Activities in the Reading for Students to Work Through as they Read.
