Harmer listed in art reference sources or botanical bibliographies. Art ref. sources note a Thomas Harmar who was working in London as an engraver in the 2nd half of the 18th century. There is, however, no evidence to link the two together. Notes (Hamnet) History: Item has been removed from the Folger copy of Pomet's Compleat history of druggs... 1737 (RM 84 P6 Cage). The volume contains numerous copper engravings of plants, roots, trees, etc., including one of the coffee (plate 47, facing page 129). The drawing varies greatly from the engraving, showing a more magnified view with greater detail. The drawing also differs in its portrayal of the way the bean grows on the tree. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: The volume from which the drawing was removed was purchased by the Library from Francis Edwards, Ltd., a London bookseller, in July of 1953 (order #B531, Acc. #140214). Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawing is executed in fine lines in the manner of botanical illustrations. It depicts a branch from the coffee tree, showing the leaves, the beans and the flowers. Notes (Hamnet) This record contains unverifiable data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance. Notes (Hamnet) Title from penned note above drawing. Folger copy signed T. Harmer and dated 1739. The last number of the date given here may be incorrect as the actual number has been copied over and the ink has run. There are pencil markings on the surface of the drawing.
